At Apple"s 30 October New York event the company announced a revamped Mac mini - the first update to the pint-sized desktop Mac .

The Mac mini has always been popular because of its affordability and usefulness as a server, a media library for the living room or a first Mac for those who don"t want to pay a premium, and the new model looks set to continue that while also offering extra power to appeal to the professional market.

Mac mini release date

Design

The 2018 Mac mini is broadly the same design as the previous model, but with one major change: it now comes in Space Grey rather than Silver, a move Apple said is partly to appeal to the pro crowd.

The size is also exactly the same - dashing any hopes for a smaller Mac mini, which makes sense given the significantly improved specs of the new model. So once again this measures 3.6cm tall and 19.7cm wide. It weighs 1.3kg - a very slight jump from the previous 1.22kg.

The final design change - Apple has switched to using 100 percent recycled aluminium thanks to a new custom alloy, along with more recycled plastic than before, making this a little more eco-friendly.

Specs

As we"ve already mentioned, the new Mac mini boasts a serious performance bump from the 2014 models. Here are the two new main configurations:

£799/$799:

• 3.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i3
• 8GB DDR4 RAM
• 128GB SSD

£1,099/$1,099:

• 3.0GHz 6-core Intel Core i5 with Turbo Boost up to 4.1GHz
• 8GB DDR4 RAM
• 256GB SSD

Processor

First up, the Mac mini is now packing Intel"s 8th-gen Coffee Lake processors for some seriously amped up performance power - Apple boasted the new devices are five times faster than before.

The entry model will include a quad-core 3.6GHz Intel Core i3 processor, but you can upgrade all the way to a 6-core i7 with Turbo Boost speeds up to 4.6GHz.

The Mac mini also includes Apple"s new T2 security chip, which offers on-the-fly data encryption, along with HEVC video encoding that"s reportedly up to 30 times faster than before.

Graphics

Unsurprisingly, given the Mac mini"s diminutive form factor, there"s still no support for a discrete graphics card - there simply isn"t the space in the enclosure.

Instead you get integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630, which should be a big step up from the last-gen devices - but still won"t be able to compete against discrete cards. Luckily, the new Thunderbolt 3 ports mean you"ll always be able to connect the Mac mini to an external GPU if you seriously need graphical performance.

RAM

RAM has arguably gotten an even bigger spec boost than anything else. The entry model Mac mini packs 8GB of 2666MHz DDR4 RAM, which is upgradeable to a whopping 64GB - a huge jump from the previous cap of 16GB.

Storage

The other big internal change is the commitment to flash storage - every single model now packs an SSD, with Apple promising that the new drives are four times faster than before.

The entry-level model includes 128GB of SSD storage, but you can upgrade all the way to 2TB.

Ports

Ports have been tweaked too, and thankfully there are plenty of them. Every model of Mac mini comes with four Thunderbolt 3 ports along with two USB-A ports, backed up by HDMI 2.0 and an audio jack - along with a socket for the AC adapter.

Gigabit ethernet also comes as standard, but this is where there"s also room for an upgrade: you can jump to a 10Gb ethernet port if you need.

There"s one big thing missing though: the SD card slot has been removed, so any photographers or anyone else reliant on SD cards will need to grab a dongle.

Here"s a rundown of the ports on the 2018 Mac mini:

Но с релизом все время что-то не ладилось. И вот, спустя четыре года и 14 дней Apple анонсировала восьмое поколение Mac mini.

Что ж, разбираемся, чем интересна новинка и что изменилось в новых Mac mini.

Каков новый Mac mini

Что ж, дизайн остался практически прежним. Никакого футуризма и немного сумасшедших фантазий дизайнеров энтузиастов. Apple решила не изменять классике, поэтому единственное, чем внешне отличается новый Mac mini от выпущенного четыре года назад компьютера, это цвет.

Mac mini будет доступен в цвете Space Gray - под стать iMac Pro и обновленным MacBook Pro.

Зато новинка получила поддержку от 4-ядерного и вплоть до 6-ядерного процессора Intel Core 8-го поколения. По заверению Apple, Mac mini стал в 5 раз быстрее .

Новый процессор пришел на смену морально устаревшего Intel Core i5 4-го поколения с двумя ядрами.

Теперь Mac mini поддерживает вплоть до 64 ГБ оперативной памяти , против 16 у предшественника. Разумеется, скорость памяти также выросла, составив 2666 МГц на планку.

Скорость SSD возросла в четыре раза . Теперь топовый Mac mini комплектуется 2-терабайтным SSD-накопителем.

Впрочем, Apple решила полностью отойти от HDD. Даже в базовой комплектации Mac mini установлен 128-гигабайтный SSD. В новых продуктах Apple нет места винчестерам.

Чем вообще примечателен Mac mini? За 36 990 рублей, будучи закоренелым виндузятником, можно опробовать в деле «хваленную ОС от Apple». Еще в пару сотен рублей обойдется мышка и клавиатура, а в качестве дисплея подойдет любой монитор.

Все, у вас есть новый компьютер Mac. На него никто не проливал кофе, не швырял на диван. Годовая гарантия и все плюшки, включая «магическую» коробку.

Mac mini по-прежнему есть в магазине Apple , но неттоп уже три года живет без обновления «железа».

Как менялись Mac mini

С 2005 по 2014 год Apple уделяла Mac mini много внимания. Компьютеры этой серии обновлялись с завидной регулярностью и Apple стремилась внедрить последние достижения из мира чипопостроения в свои неттопы.

Судите сами:

2005 год: Mac mini PowerPC G4 . Первенец в новой категории компьютеров. Новый дизайн, встроенный дисковод-щель, компактное решение, опережавшее свое время. За год Apple выпустила три(!) аппаратных апгрейта.

2006 год: Mac mini и процессоры Intel . Apple отказывается от «горячих» чипов PowerPC и переходит на на процессоры Intel. Сперва компания осваивает модель Intel Core и впервые замахивается на планку в 4 ГБ оперативной памяти.

Особенность моделей - полная кастомизация. Пользователь мог легко сменить процессор Intel Core на Intel Core 2 Duo и расширить ОЗУ до 4 ГБ.

2007 - 2009 года: Mac mini и эра Intel Core 2 Duo . Минорный апдейт 2007 года завершился глобальным обновление в конце 2009. 20 октября 2009 Apple анонсировала производительный Mac mini с возможность установки 8 ГБ ОЗУ, графикой Nvidia GeForce 9400М и процессором Intel Core 2 Duo.

С годами возросла потребность в USB портах и в новом Mac mini их появилось целых пять (пока USB 2.0).

2010 год - первый редизайн Mac mini . В этом году Apple анонсировала Mac mini в трендовом «цельнометаллическом корпусе». Пока в нем по-прежнему процессор-середнячок (по меркам 2010 года), но появился HDMI и порт для SD-карт.

2011 год - 2014 Mac mini без дисковода, но с процессорами Core i5/i7 . Новый виток в жизни неттопов Apple. Как и с портом miniJack компания предвидела будущее - кому сейчас нужен CD-Rom? С 2011 года все Mac mini выходят без характерной «щели» для болванок, но зато с процессорами Intel Core i5/i7.

Назвать эти модели «унылым компьютером для офиса» не поворачивается язык.

Обновление компьютеры Mac mini увидели три раза: в середине 2011, в конце 2012 и в конце 2014 года. В 2014 Apple успела похоронить и серверную версию Mac Mini Server, отказавшись от дальнейшего производства.

И с тех пор тишина…

Чего ждать от новых Mac mini

Вице-президент Apple по маркетинг, господин Фил Шиллер, неоднократно подчеркивал, что «Mac mini - очень важный для компании продукт».

Т.е. Apple не собирается прекращать производство компактных неттопов и готовит что-то новое.

Процессоры Haswell (22 нм) немного попахивают ветхой книгой. С 2014 года Intel успела выпустить:

• Broadwell (14-нанометровый техпроцесс);
• Skylake (14 нм)
• Kaby Lake (14 нм)

а, тем временем, на подходе уже Coffee Lake (14 нм), релиз которых запланирован на 4-й квартал 2017 года.

Даже если Apple выберет процессоры Kaby Lake (что и вероятнее всего), будущих покупателей Mac mini ждет, как минимум:

• 30-процентный прирост производительности,
• повышенная энергоэффективность,
• поддержка USB Type-C (куда без него в 2018-м),
• поддержка форматов HEVC на аппаратном уровне,
• комфортный 4К,

и много-много приятных сюрпризов.

Когда?

О Mac mini нового поколения известно совсем немного. Неттоп испытал всего два кардинальных редизайна и Apple пора сделать решительный шаг в третий раз.

Ждать от Apple нового анонса до конца года вряд ли стоит. Но у Mac mini есть все шансы блеснуть весной 2018 года.

MacBook Air реинкарнировал в MacBook. Прибавив в производительности, MacBook Pro 2017 изрядно похудел и стал походить на MacBook Air.

Очередь за Mac mini: в новом корпусе, с повышенной производительностью и таким же приятным ценником.

I order new Mac Mini this month 2017 and I realized it is 3 years old found from MacTracker app information of Mac Mini (Late 2014).

Now I don"t know why Apple didn"t explain to me at Apple store that I plan to buy Mac mini to replace my dead MacBook Pro 2011 laptop.

Now I"m worried the New Mac Mini has not show generations online that I ordered waiting for shipping to my home address on this month Nov. 30, 2017.

So it hurt me and worried of Mac Mini performance for the next 10 years of normal break down or earlier years.

I expected to watch new Apple model every year to decide when I would buy NOT 3 years old computer machine

as MacTracker shows?

If I see Model Identifier Macmini7,1 be same as 2017 relate to (Late 2014)?

What happen to 2012 Mac Mini performance was better then that 2017 Mac Mini that this might be slower to run

new OS upgrade performance?

If I understand for very good reason. if I disagreed I might want to return it. Apple says replace new computer I think 3 to 5 years because new OS upgrade performance won"t runs well on older hardware. I paid $2,000.00 for that Mac Mini that I expected to last 10+ years.
